Hundreds of small individual marks are placed next to each other on a 1”x1” grid. These marks are a small, tight and controlled action made by physically removing, marring and damaging the surface of the matrix with a blade. When viewed from afar the small marks on a large grid lose their individuality. It is only by getting close to the work and examining it that the viewer realizes that what appears to be a plain, unassuming pattern is actually made of individual instances, visual signifiers of discomfort.
By layering a different version of the same pattern on top of a larger grid, these systems of control are forced to confront one another, sometimes directly following the pattern, other times disrupting it.
Handmade paper elements bring the micro into the macro.
